Travel to UK with electronic travel authorization (ETA)
January 21, 2025
Starting in 2025, citizens of countries that are allowed visa-free entry to the UK will need to obtain electronic travel authorization before traveling. The operation is simple enough, but mandatory.
The electronic travel authorization system, or ETA, is an analogue of similar systems in other parts of the world that are either already in place, like ESTA, which has been operating in the U.S. since 2009, or will soon be in place, like ETIAS, which is expected to be operational in the European Union later in 2025.
The UK ETA allows authorities to conduct a check on the person entering before they even reach the national border. It is important to understand that this is not a visa and is only valid for travelers who are allowed visa-free entry to the UK. The system applies to stay of up to 6 months. If a foreigner from a relevant country is a resident in the UK, the ETA system does not apply.
The system is being introduced in two stages: the first part was launched on January 8 – for citizens of countries and territories with which a visa-free regime is established, except the European Union, and starting from April 2 the system will begin to apply to EU citizens as well. Lists of all the countries for which the system is or will soon be operational are available at https://www.gov.uk/guidance/check-when-you-can-get-an-electronic-travel-authorisation-eta.
The ETA application fee is £10. It is recommended to register through a special mobile app – the “UK ETA,” links for Android and iPhone devices to install it are available on the official web site at https://www.gov.uk/guidance/apply-for-an-electronic-travel-authorisation-eta. If you are unable to use the mobile app, you can register online directly through the web site.
The whole process is expected to take about 20 minutes, and you must do it all in one go – the system does not allow you to save partially entered data and resume registration later. The process requires a passport of the respective state, an email address and a card for paying the fee (you can also pay via Apple Pay or Google Pay).
During the registration process, you will need to take a photo of your passport, yourself (or the person you are applying for) and scan the applicant’s face. You will also need, among other things, to answer questions about your employment and criminal history. Detailed instructions on the registration process are available at https://www.gov.uk/guidance/using-the-uk-eta-app. Do note, however, that an ETA alone does not guarantee admission to the UK.
A decision on the application is usually provided within 3 days. The authorization is valid for 2 years or until the passport expires (whichever comes first). Be prudent, plan all your actions well in advance.
